About Talavera
Between 1550 and 1570, the talavera pottery process was brought to Mexico by the Spanish Friars from Talavera La Reina, Spain.
Today's talavera production is largely done by families who have passed down the techniques from generation to generation. The original patterns have evolved and changed with the influence of the Mexican culture and today's talavera features bright, vivid patterns in items ranging from huge tibors to tiles for construction to dishes for display and use.
The process of producing talavera begins with pottery which is made of clay. It is then hand painted with a glaze and fired in a kiln after which the colors are applied to the pottery and the pieces are then fired again for over 12 hours. The end product is the beautiful, hand painted dishes that you see in our store and on our web-site. Each piece having been individually painted with the hand of a true artist. It should be noted that there may be some slight pitting in the paint that occurs during the firing process, but this is all part of the ancient art.
